From the duo behind If I Had a Dinosaur, Gabby Dawnay and Alex Barrow's If I Had a Sleepy Sloth is a charming and imaginative tale about taking the time to slow down.

Have you ever wondered what the best kind of pet is? It's a sloth, of course! When a little girl imagines experiencing a slower pace of life, she can't think of a better companion than a sleepy sloth. She could spend almost an entire day just taking a morning walk with her sloth. When the little girl introduces her sloth to her hairdresser, the hairdresser isn't pleased to discover the moss and moths (ewww!) that live in its fur, but what does that matter when her sloth is a champion on the jungle gym and amazing at climbing trees because of its super gripping skills!

With vibrant illustrations and playful rhymes, If I Had a Sleepy Sloth is a laugh- out-loud story that imagines having a sloth for a pet and provides a welcome alternative to the fast pace of modern life.

Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney's warm, humorous retelling of a popular African-American folk ballad.

When John Henry was born the birds, bears, rabbits, and even a unicorn came to see him. He grew so fast, he burst right through the porch roof, and laughed so loud, he scared the sun! Soon John Henry is swinging two huge sledgehammers to build roads, pulverizing boulders, and smashing rocks to smithereens. He's stronger than ten men and can dig through a mountain faster than a steam drill. Nothing can stop John Henry, and his courage stays with us forever.

Boy meets girl in this story of reluctant friendship that introduces young readers to the concept of similes

Summer drags, like a book that starts out good, then isn't. The boy is bored, like a frog waiting for a fly to buzz by. So the boy hops on his bike and heads for the playground, where he finds a girl on a swing who beckons him to join her. At first, the boy is reluctant, but soon they are having fun like best friends, like characters in a book with a happy ending.

Once upon a time, when magic was common and princesses were many, there lived a powerful wizard named Druth. He could transform a prince into a toad, or a shepherd boy into a sheep by a mere flick of his finger. But no matter how hard he tried he could not enchant a princess by any magic at all. Enraged and humiliated, Druth took revenge upon three kingdoms whose princesses he was unable to enchant. He flooded their lands and imprisoned the people in a deep, unending sleep. He saved one princess alone, however. She was a baby named Lona whom Druth planned to raise himself until she was old enough to enchant. Some new spell, he was certain, would eventually succeed. But when she grew up, Lona showed surprising courage, challenging the mighty wizard’s power.

Written and photographed by Dare Wright, Lona: A Fairy Tale, was intended for an older audience than her earlier well-known Lonely Doll books. Wright photographed herself in the book as the full-sized Princess Lona , and she then used the doll as the enchanted small-sized version. The magic special effects in the pictures were created in Dare’s closet darkroom long before the advent of digital help (https://darewright.com/dare-wright-books/).
